Why coaxial loudspeakers make the difference in a cinema
In a multi-way loudspeaker the tweeter and the midbass driver sit at different points on the baffle. You can hear it: depending on where in the room someone sits, the path lengths differ, and in the crossover region the tonal balance shifts with the seating position. In a living room with a single armchair that barely registers. In a cinema with three rows it is the reason row one sounds different from row three.
Ascendo Immersive Audio therefore uses coaxial drivers throughout: the tweeter sits at the centre of the midbass driver, and both radiate from the same point. The result is a genuine point source with dispersion that stays even across the whole relevant angle. For a cinema where every seat is meant to be a good seat, that is not a detail, it is the foundation.
The second point is imaging in three dimensions. Immersive audio formats work with objects that are meant to move through the room. If the loudspeakers themselves already blur the imaging, the system gives away precisely the quality the client paid for.
How the range is structured
At first glance the catalogue looks confusing, but it follows a clear logic. An item is described by four attributes, and once the order is clear, everything falls into place.
First, the size: the model name is the driver diameter in inches, from The5 to The15 among the coaxial monitors and from The12 Sub to The100 Sub in the bass. Second, the line: models without a suffix are the standard line, the Pro suffix marks the reference line with a different motor and a different cabinet. Third, the form factor, meaning On Wall, Wedge for angled placement, Narrow for tight installation points, Ceiling for overhead. And fourth, how the loudspeaker is driven, which deserves a closer look below.

The point where most costing mistakes happen is how the loudspeakers are driven, so two similar-sounding designations deserve a close look. "Active" means the amplifier sits inside the unit and it only needs power and signal. That applies above all to the standard line subwoofers. "Pro Active EXT" means the opposite: externally driven. These models require dedicated DSP and amplifier channels from the range, and for the Black Swan Reference Cinema that is three channels per loudspeaker. Quote a set of three front channels and forget the electronics, and the quotation will be well off the mark. Passive models also need DSP and amplification, just without the active crossover architecture.
Beryllium is not a separate line but an option on the Pro models from The12 upwards. The difference sits in the treble: beryllium has a stiffness to mass ratio no other available diaphragm material reaches, and the speed of sound in the material is roughly two and a half times that of titanium. In practice the break-up modes of the diaphragm move out of the audible range, and what remains within the passband is cleaner. In a cinema where dialogue intelligibility decides the overall impression, that is the step worth demonstrating before talking about price.
A note on naming, because it regularly causes confusion in existing installations: the cinema monitors used to be called CCRM, so the CCRM15 is now The15. Among the subwoofers, older projects ran under designations such as SMSG 15, SMSG 24, SMSG 32 or SMSG 50, whereas the current system names the driver size directly. Ascendo Immersive Audio develops and manufactures in Germany, based in Heilsbronn. For projects with unusual dimensions or non-standard finishes that is a practical advantage: the route to production is short, and special requests are more likely to fail on physics than on logistics.
Typical projects
The brand plays to its strengths where the room belongs to the cinema and not the other way round. The most common case is the dedicated home cinema with an acoustically transparent screen, allowing the front channels to sit at ear height behind it, complemented by a high number of surround and ceiling channels. That is exactly the configuration in which even dispersion pays off, because the many channels do not smear into each other.
The second typical case is bass. A cinema room meant to reproduce infrasound cleanly needs cone area and cabinet volume, not more amplifier power on drivers that are too small. We frequently see projects where an existing cinema is upgraded in the bass region alone and afterwards subjectively feels like a new system.
The third case is the demonstration room at the specialist company itself. Anyone selling immersive audio has to be able to show it, and a demo room that genuinely makes the differences audible shortens sales conversations considerably.
What should be settled before planning
The first question is the space behind the screen. Reference-size coaxial cinema monitors are not shallow in-wall loudspeakers, they need depth and a load-bearing structure. Settle that only once the drywall is up and you lose either image width or loudspeaker size. Fix the construction depth behind the fabric before the frame is ordered.
Second, how the loudspeakers are driven. The reference models are externally driven: DSP and amplifier channels live in the equipment rack, not in the loudspeaker. That determines rack space, power requirement and the number of signal paths that have to pass through the wall, and for the Black Swan Reference Cinema that is three channels per loudspeaker. Work it out after the shell is built and you will be laying cables twice. Include the electronics in the quotation from the outset: on these models they are not an accessory, they are a prerequisite.
Third, the bass. Establish early how many subwoofers of which size the room can take and where they are allowed to stand. Their positions determine the evenness of the bass across the seating area at least as much as the model itself. And fourth, the structural side: wall brackets and ceiling mounts for loudspeakers in this weight class belong in the planning, not in improvisation on site.

At the same mass beryllium is considerably stiffer, and the speed of sound in the material is roughly two and a half times that of titanium.
